MERCER, Frederick R.B.S.A. (act.
c.1875-c.1937)
Frederick Mercer lived in Birmingham and painted
in both oil and watercolour, landscapes, coastal scenes, rivers, mills, cottages
and occasionally figure and genre subjects. He depicted many scenes in Wales and
the Midlands and exhibited regularly at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists
between 1871 and 1911, some 116 works in all! He was elected an Associate of the
R.B.S.A. in 1888 and a full Member in 1922. He lived in Birmingham Circa 1881
moving to "Radmoor Wood", Abbots Bromley, Rugeley, Staffordshire in 1883.
A stunning watercolour of Polperro, Cornwall signed bas gauche. The small
fishing village has changed little since this was painted, probably in the late
19th century when the artist travelled around Cornwall.
