CRAIGMYLE, Anthea, Lady (1933)
Anthea Craigmyle is a very special
artist. She trained at the Chelsea School of Art under the guidance of
distinguished artists such as Julian Trevelyan and Ceri Richards. In the early
part of her career, Anthea developed a style that reflected her childhood
experiences of the war and her paintings frequently portrayed a sombre mood.
In the seventies, though, Anthea made a
conscious decision to change her approach. Her more recent experiences were much
more positive and her pictures began to reflect her love of life and her
enthusiasm for other people.
‘Mending the Small Green Boat’
is typical of her style: a group of men, with an air of industriousness and
benevolence, working on a boat set against a Scottish seaside background.
Anthea
makes frequent visits to Scotland but now lives and paints at her home alongside
the Thames at Chiswick. She has a growing number of followers and her work has
been described as ‘the next big thing’ in the fashionable world of limited
edition prints.
