Robert Borlase SMART (1881-1947)

Born in Kingsbridge, Devon in 1881 he studied at Plymouth College of
Art in 1897.
He settled in St Ives in 1919. In 1925 he moved to Salcombe, Devon, and when
Smart returned in 1928 he became a member of the recently formed St Ives Society
of Artists and was voted on to the Committee in 1929. In 1933 he assumed the
role of Secretary which he retained it for the rest of his life.
